Acting President of Ukraine, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov deems it necessary to establish a demilitarized zone in Crimea.

Oleksandr Turchynov informed this during the briefing after the meeting with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

“Military men of both Parties should go beyond the territory of Crimea and negotiations should be held exclusively through peaceful means,” he said.

“Demilitarization of Crimea can help stop further aggression and promote restoration of sovereignty of Ukrainian territory, as well as normal functioning of Crimea within the territory of sovereign Ukraine, as required by the Constitution” added Oleksandr Turchynov.

He informed that during the meeting, the Parties discussed the situation in connection with aggression of the Russian Federation against independent and sovereign Ukraine and occupation of Crimean territory. He reminded that this issue was repeatedly considered during the meeting of the UN Security Council and expressed gratitude for the support of its member states.

In the course of today’s negotiations, Oleksandr Turchynov said that “we have also reached a common stand in regard to establishing an international commission, within the representation of countries that signed the Budapest Memorandum, under the UN chairmanship.”

“Ukraine does everything possible to settle this conflict by peaceful means and we are thankful to the UN for its assistance,” said the Chairman of the Parliament. “We support presence of the UN Monitoring Mission in Crimea, which is especially important under the condition of severe provocations against Ukrainian military that fulfill their constitutional duty in Crimea.”

Oleksandr Turchynov claimed also that “we treat the UN, one of the co-founders of which in 1945 was Ukraine, with extreme respect and we are grateful to the UN Secretary General for his visit to our Crimea in such dramatic period of our history.”
